Billabong Pro Tahiti
Event No. 6 of 10 on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT)
Teahupo’o, Tahiti
August 15-26th, 2013

Thursday Aug 15th, 2013 (Teahupo’o, Tahiti): The Billabong Pro Tahiti, event number six on the 2013 ASP Men’s World Championship Tour, got underway today in clean one-to-two metre waves at the infamous Teahupo’o in French Polynesia.

Conditions were more picturesque than death defying, but that didn’t stop the main event wildcards from drawing blood.

World rated number 5 Taj Burrow (WA, AUS), world rated number 6 Nat Young (CA, AUS) and world rated number 7 Adriano de Souza (Guarujá, BRA) were all eliminated by surfers who qualified via last week’s Air Tahiti Nui Trials.

Australian wildcard, Anthony Walsh (NSW, AUS) shone brightest; the 30 year-old had the honour of registering the Billabong Pro’s first perfect 10 in Round 1 versus reigning World Champion, Joel Parkinson (Qld, AUS).

It wasn’t enough to eliminate Parkinson, who ultimately secured the two best waves of the clash to advance directly to Round 3, but Walsh rebounded in fine fashion late in the day to eliminate Young.

Another Walsh, Ian Walsh from Maui, Hawaii, accounted for world number five, Burrow in what should have been a heat that went the Aussie’s way.

Walsh is an acclaimed big wave specialist, but today in the small, shifty wedges at Teahupo’o, the Hawaiian had luck on his side, Burrow snapped his surfboard mid-way on what could have been the winning ride.

When the hooter sounded, Walsh had done enough; securing victory over one of pro-surfing’s most successful campaigners 12.40 to 8.00 points.

The third big upset occurred in the final heat of the day, with local Tahitian Alain Riou (PYF) eliminating Brazilian hero, Adriano de Souza.

Riou’s efforts were cheered on by a flotilla of friends who erupted when De Souza’s last minute ride came up agonisingly short – the Tahitian eliminated the world number seven by just 0.3 of a point.

One more wildcard remains in Round 2, Australian Nathan Hedge (NSW, AUS) has drawn local Tahitian surfer and current world rated number eight, Michel Bourez (PYF).

Hedge is a former WCT surfer himself, and has previously finished second and third in the Billabong Pro, making him a genuine threat at Teahupo’o.

World Tour front-runners Mick Fanning (Qld, AUS), Kelly Slater (Fl, USA), Joel Parkinson and Jordy Smith (Durban, ZAF) all secured Round 3 berths today with solid performances.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 06:30 to assess conditions for a possible 07:00 start.

When competition resumes, up first will be Bourez, against Hedge in Heat 5 of Round 2.
